Examination of the Effects of ’Yan-shara Hoodlums on the Muslims of Keffi LGA, Nasarawa State-Nigeria

The activities of ’Yan shara had drawn the attention of security operatives and become a concern of the peaceful citizens. The activities of the group are gradually becoming very alarming that need academic attention. The activities of the group include fighting each other with dangerous weapons, sometimes affect innocent citizens. The aim of this article is to examine the level of damage caused by this hoodlums to the lives and properties of people in Keffi and its environs and to draw the attention of those at the helm of affairs to be vigilant at all times and provide a possible solution to the mayhem. The methodology adopted is quantitative as well as qualitative where data was collected through interview, personal observation, books and journals. The significance of the paper lies in drawing the attention of stakeholders, government, security agencies, parents, scholars and traditional rulers to address the situation of idleness among Muslim youths as it is one of the causes of criminal activities in Keffi. The findings of the paper revealed that the activities of ’Yan shara hoodlums have devastating effects on both the individuals and the society at large because it causes life, injuries, loss of lives and properties of people. The paper, recommends proper implementations of punishments as provided by Sharī‘ah as well as panel code of Federal Republic of Nigeria.
