Sunnah is the second most important source in Islam after Qur’an and serves as a fundamental guide in shaping the way of life of Muslims. Sunnah are collections of the reported sayings, actions and tacit approvals of the Prophet Muhammad which collectively serve as role-models for the entire Muslim community. In the development of a Muslim’s identity, understanding Sunnah constitutes a crucial foundation for shaping one’s worldview and lifestyle, particularly among university students. This is due to university students represent a group of young intellectuals who play a significant role in shaping the future of society and the nation. Therefore, their level of understanding of Islamic principles, especially Sunnah requires serious attention. A good understanding on Sunnah can enable them to become agents of change grounded in Islamic values. However, in the modern era marked by the challenges of globalization, social media, and various external influences, the questions arise regarding the extent to which Muslim university students truly understand Sunnah and practice it in their daily life. In this regard, the study is conducted to examine the understanding of Sunnah among Muslim university students in Malaysia. The objective of this study is to identify the main findings of previous studies and to explore research gaps related to the understanding and practice of Sunnah among university students in higher education institutions. Accordingly, this study adopts a qualitative research approach using a literature review method. Secondary data are collected from previous scholarly sources such as journal articles, books, theses, and official documents related to students’ understanding of the Sunnah. The findings of this study are expected to identify existing research gaps concerning the understanding and practice of the Sunnah among university students in Malaysia and to propose directions for future research aimed at strengthening Sunnah understanding among the younger Muslim generation, particularly university students in higher education institutions in Malaysia.
